Discovery of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is one of the most fascinating things that had happened to me since I arrived in Japan. After considerable experience in various martial arts, I realized that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the only martial art where its main objective is to defeat power with skill to the maximum degree.
That makes Brazilian Jiu-jitsu a never ending game of chess, which requires the use of every part of the body to its advantage. Like in chess, Jiu-jitsu is a test of patience, quick thinking, and humility, where a well planned succession of small moves and countermoves produces spectacular outcomes.
Jiu-jitsu is a subtle and immensely rewarding martial art where the master becomes one with the body and mind. I have been privileged to find such a master in Yuki Ishikawa. Being the humble person that he is, he would deny this fact, as he still considers himself a student of the art. Make no mistake, however. At 66kg and 166cm, he is capable of swiftly and gently submitting an opponent who is 20kg heavier and 20cm taller than he (like myself), without working up a sweat. It looks like a fun sport, and I urge you to try it! Miguel A. Carriedo |
